Remote Pharmacist Support for GP Practices, PCNs and ICBs

A fully managed remote pharmacist service delivered by UK-based clinical pharmacists

Our remote pharmacist service delivers structured medication reviews, prescription workflows and long-term condition support through one fully managed clinical service. UK-based clinical pharmacists work remotely within your clinical system to take the medicines workload off your practice.

A remote pharmacist gives you clinical pharmacy output and oversight without adding to your on-site team. We deliver the service and stay accountable for it, across GP practices, PCNs and ICBs throughout the UK.

How Will This Help My Practice?

Virtual Pharmacist’s remote pharmacists use structured, governed workflows aligned with national guidance to strengthen safety, quality and outcomes for your practice, PCN or ICB.

Take the Medicines Work Off Your Team

Our remote pharmacists handle clinical and structured medication reviews, acute and repeat prescriptions, discharge reconciliation, high-risk drug monitoring and long-term condition clinics, so your clinicians can focus on the patients who need them most.

Support for PCNs and ICBs

We deliver remote pharmacist support at practice, PCN and ICB level, from ARRS delivery and PCN management support to ICB medicines management and medicines optimisation, aligned to national standards and your local priorities.

One Accountable Managed Service

We deliver the work, handle clinical oversight and report on outcomes, so there is no recruiting, rostering or supervising for your team. We adjust the volume of work we take on as your workload changes, and the service runs under our clinical governance and data security framework and GPhC professional regulation, with clinical work under your practice’s own CQC registration.

Simple Onboarding Processes

We agree the medicines work you want covered, set our pharmacists up in your clinical system under your information governance, and start delivery against an agreed workplan, typically soon after scoping. Regular reporting shows you the clinical impact.

What is a remote pharmacist?

A remote pharmacist, sometimes called a remote clinical pharmacist, is a clinical pharmacist who works within your practice systems without being physically on site. They log in to your clinical system, EMIS or SystmOne, and work on your real patient records in real time: reviewing medication, actioning prescription requests, running monitoring and documenting everything in the record in the same way an on-site pharmacist would for the same tasks.

With Virtual Pharmacist the difference is that this is not a staffing arrangement. We deliver a defined body of clinical pharmacy work as a fully managed service and remain accountable for how that work is done, so your practice, PCN or ICB gets the clinical output without taking on recruitment, supervision or day-to-day management.

Is remote pharmacy safe? Clinical governance and oversight

Safety in clinical pharmacy does not come from being in the building. It comes from access to the full patient record, clear clinical protocols, sensible escalation routes, supervision and audit, and a structured remote clinical pharmacist service is designed to build all of these in as standard.

Our remote pharmacists are GPhC-registered and work under our clinical governance and data security framework, within your information governance and your practice’s own CQC registration. Access is through secure, role-based logins to your existing clinical system, and every action is recorded in the patient record. Where independent prescribing is in scope, it is carried out within agreed protocols. You can read more on our Clinical Governance and Data Security page.

Remote pharmacist support, without the recruitment

Recruiting a clinical pharmacist can take months and often means competing with every other practice and PCN in your area, while leaving you carrying the cover, indemnity and appraisal burden once they start. A remote pharmacist service removes that. We deliver continuity as a managed service, adjust the volume of work we take on as your needs change, and remain accountable for quality and governance.

Practices and PCNs typically use our remote pharmacy service to clear medication review and monitoring backlogs, keep acute and repeat prescribing moving, prepare for CQC, and take prescribing and monitoring work off the practice so GP and ANP time is protected for the patients who most need face-to-face care. At ICB level, the same managed model supports medicines optimisation at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

A remote pharmacist is a clinical pharmacist who works remotely within your practice systems to carry out medicines work, rather than being based on site. With Virtual Pharmacist, that work is delivered as a fully managed service that we are accountable for.

Yes. Both describe a clinical pharmacist working remotely to support your practice, PCN or ICB. Virtual Pharmacist delivers this as a managed clinical service across the UK.

Medication reviews, acute and repeat prescription workflows, discharge and letter reconciliation, high-risk drug monitoring, long-term condition clinics, and quality and audit work, aligned to national standards.

Where the work calls for it, our service includes independent prescribing pharmacists working within your agreed protocols and clinical governance. Scope is set with you during scoping.

Our pharmacists work within your existing clinical system under your information governance, whether that is EMIS, SystmOne or another system, and the service runs under our clinical governance and data security framework.

Because there is no recruitment to run, the service can typically begin soon after scoping and system access are in place.
